Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Establish client needs
  • Liaise with client or sample provider to determine client needs and sample history
  • Match sample provided to accompanying documentation and report any discrepancies in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Identify non-routine samples and the possible need to vary workplace procedures
  • Confirm any proposed variations and document approved changes
       
Element: Prepare samples and standards
  • Obtain a representative analytical portion of the laboratory sample
  • Prepare sample in accordance with testing requirements
  • Prepare validation checks and/or calibration standards for analytical portion
  • Use specialised procedures for ultra-trace sample and standard preparation
       
Element: Set up and optimise instrument
  • Perform pre-use and safety checks in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Start up and condition the instrument in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Optimise instrumental parameters to suit sample and test requirements
  • Check calibration status of instrument and perform calibration using specified standards and procedures
  • Clean, care for and store equipment and consumables in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Measure analyte response for standards, validation checks and samples
  • Conduct sufficient measurements to obtain reliable data
  • Return instruments to standby or shutdown condition
  • Store unused/prepared laboratory samples for future reference in accordance with workplace procedures

  • Troubleshoot basic procedure, reagent or equipment problems which have led to atypical data or results

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts.
